Ghana, a former British colony, is a beautiful, green and lush country. Since gaining independence in 1957, the first African country to do so, it has seen its reputation as one of the friendliest countries in the area firmly cemented. The people are incredibly welcoming and are always keen to ask your name and find out where you are from. This is especially true for children who will always shout after you in the street. Even something as simple as a wave and a smile will bring plenty of laughter from them.

Ghanaians are keen to learn and have a huge amount of pride in their country. This can be seen from celebrations on Independence Day or at any football match involving the much loved national football team, the Black Stars.

Anyone wanting to explore the country will not be let down either. On the coast, many poignant reminders of the slave trade are still visible. Many of the imposing castles where slaves were held in terrible conditions can still be visited today. In the north, wild animals such as elephants and crocodiles can be found and this gives great opportunities for safari. In the east, the largest man made lake in the world and the green mountains surrounding it can take your breath away with their beauty.

Overall, whether volunteering or travelling, Ghana will not disappoint. You will leave with many happy memories that you will treasure in years to come.
